Within the machining metrology space, there are several different types of depth gauges available. To learn about other measurement gauges, see our related guide on the types of gauges. The balance of this article will focus primarily on the former type of depth gauge only, namely the instrument used in machining metrology. That instrument is usually employed in situations where it is necessary to gauge the depth of holes drilled into bones for securing implants or other similar surgical uses. Another use of the term depth gauge is associated with medical applications and is termed a surgical or orthopedic depth gauge. Devices of this type are often referred to as diving depth gauges and are used by scuba divers to record the pressure associated with their dive levels. One alternative is the type of pressure monitor and display that can be used to indicate the pressure level associated with a given depth of immersion in water. It should be noted that the term depth gauge may also refer to several alternative types of products. Generally, the proper usage is the former. Most references to the word gauge when referring to measurement instruments spell the noun with the letter u (gauge), but there are still cases where the spelling of the noun omits the letter u (gage), resulting in the term depth gage. The material’s surface represents the reference plane against which the depth measurement is made by the instrument. Less complex and precise tools, rule gages and combination rule gages are also available. They offer very good accuracy as do dial and vernier depth gages. electronic depth gage variations are available, with or without coolant protection, and optional data output. The most accurate are depth micrometers (electronic, dial and vernier) and dial indicator depth gages. a choice of products varying in form, complexity, cost and accuracy.
